Trust your gut (literally)

Trust your gut (literally)

Nobody warns you that pregnancy turns your gut into a drama queen.

The bloating. The heartburn. The constipation that's suddenly a personality trait. That 3pm "why does my tummy look six months pregnant when I'm only six weeks" moment. You're not imagining it and you're definitely not alone.

Here's the wild part: that same gut giving you grief is also one of the most important systems in your baby's entire development. It's not along for the ride. It's quietly running the show.

What "gut health" actually means

Inside your gut lives a thriving city of around 100 trillion microorganisms,  your microbiome. A healthy one is a busy, balanced, diverse city. An unhealthy one is a ghost town with a few troublemakers running wild.

And this little city does so much more than help you poop: it pulls nutrients out of your food (so your folate, choline, iron and B12 actually get absorbed), trains your immune system (about 70% of which lives in your gut), makes most of your serotonin — yes, your "happy hormone" is mostly built in your belly and talks straight to your brain, which is why anxiety gives you tummy aches and a dodgy meal wrecks your mood.

Why it matters at every single stage

  • Trying to conceive: a balanced microbiome supports hormonal balance, helps your body process oestrogen, and helps you absorb the nutrients — folate, iron, zinc, B vitamins — your body wants on board before baby. The gogos knew this instinctively: they fed soon-to-be mothers stews, fermented sorghum drinks, leafy greens, and slow-cooked bone broths long before anyone called it "gut health." They were ahead of the science.
  • Pregnancy: two words: hormones and pressure. Progesterone (the hormone keeping your pregnancy going) relaxes smooth muscle, and your gut is made of exactly that, so digestion slows right down. Relaxin piles on. Then your growing uterus starts pressing on your intestines from the inside. Hello, food-baby. It's not a flaw,  it's pregnancy doing its job. But it means your gut needs more support here, not less.
  • Birth: as your baby is born, they receive a starter pack of your bacteria that shapes their immune system, digestion and even brain development for life. Vaginal birth coats them in your gut and vaginal bacteria; a C-section shifts the mix. Neither is "wrong",  but the healthier and more diverse your microbiome going in, the richer the starter pack your baby inherits.
  • Breastfeeding & the fourth trimester: your gut takes on two huge jobs at once  rebuilding itself after the battering of birth, meds and no sleep, and helping produce milk that's literally alive with good bacteria: your baby's first probiotic dose. So when you feel like you're running on empty postpartum, there's a real biological reason. Your gut is rebuilding and exporting goodness 24/7.

So why prebiotics and probiotics and digestive enzymes?

This is where most supplements cut corners, they toss in a probiotic and call it a day. But a healthy gut needs all three:

  • 🦠 Probiotics are the good bacteria: the workers you're adding to the city.
  • 🌱 Prebiotics are the food those bacteria eat. No prebiotics, and the probiotics can't multiply or settle in. (This is the bit most supplements forget and why so many don't work.)
  • Digestive enzymes are the tools that help you actually break food down, especially handy when pregnancy hormones have slowed everything to a crawl, so you absorb more of every nutrient.

Probiotics without prebiotics is like dropping new residents into a city with no food. Enzymes without bacteria is a well-fed city with no workers. You need all three for the system to thrive.

An honest note

Pregnancy and postpartum digestion are deeply personal,  some mom's sail through, some struggle every trimester, some find probiotics life-changing and some don't. The microbiome is one of the most exciting frontiers in maternal health, and there's still lots to learn. But what's clear: your gut works harder in motherhood than at any other time, the discomfort is almost universal, and your microbiome helps shape your baby's. Supporting it isn't optional,  it's foundational.
